Video Master-y Class
Presenting another video in the Faber Piano Institute master class series!

Book: Piano Adventures Gold Star Performance Level 1
Piece: Colorful Sonatina, First Movement

The difference between a "correct" performance and one that makes the audience sit up and take notice is often a matter of dynamics. Everyone responds to the change in energy between soft and loud, between quiet and bold. These changes make the music "speak" and keep the listener's interest.

Young pianists don't always realize that unless they play loud—genuinely loud and strong—they can't make sounds that are convincingly soft. The opposite is equally true. Michael knows what forte and piano mean, but he needs encouragement to play with real contrast. The duet accompaniment is a musical way to help him make "a really, really sharp performance."

Power. Energy. Emphasis. Dynamics!

Children's Chamber Music Video
Piece: Minuet in G, BWV Anhang 116
from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

Playing the piano can be a lonely business for most, especially young, pianists. Making music with others is not only a social plus, but it's also important for developing musical sensitivity to other sounds and timbres—things often missing in a pianist’s education and experience.

Although learning about balance is ultimately developing aural discrimination, making a visual comparison is a simple, direct way to help a younger player appreciate the difference between contrasting timbres. Kai and Vivian get that picture immediately and see why adjustments have to be made.

Kai learns that playing with an up-touch is what's needed to create a more refined accompaniment. "Taming" the piano is not just a matter of playing softer. And another "trick" is introduced. The left foot can also help make a difference. Smart pedal, indeed!
